Angry Engine knock and shut off

Vette has been sitting in storage with occasional start ups and drive time. Hasn't been driven since October of last year though. Went to start it up tonight after it has sat unstarted and undriven for 5 months and the video linked here http://youtu.be/EKXVAE4pmRk is what happened...hopefully someone can point me in the right direction as to what the problem is. Thanks in advance for any and all help/advice.

    HI there,

You will need to provide us with more information. #1, did you put stabilizer in the gas tank ??? #2, what were the conditions of the storage?? #3, are you in a high moisture environment??

What is your odometer mileage? Are there any modifications to the vehicle??? What is the year of your vehicle??/

Wow, that's not starting normally at all. Someone gave it gas once it started but you should not have to do that at all, it should kick it's own idle up automatically. Your battery sounds weak too to me.

On a side not and I'm not flaming you here, but I never use stabil while storing anything I own. Full tanks of fuel and that's it. That crap can cause more issues then it's worth the longer it's left in a tank/system.

    Hey Paul,
Sorry about the lack if info I'll beef it up in this response.

1: no stabilizer, water in the tank was my first worry so I drained the tank and put fresh gas in with some gunk brand injection cleaner/blah blah for safe measure. So the "start up" you heard was with the new gas.

2: storage conditions were German winter weather which has been cold and rainy with a day or two of snow. As far as location of storage it was in an uncovered gated lot so exposed to the elements and no car cover.

3: I'm not sure if south Germany is considered a high moisture enviornment or not, I know it's not very humid but it rains a lot haha so I guess so.

    Odometer is at 80,000, completely stock everything, and it's a 2002 Z06.

I hope all that is enough to help, I really appreciate your quick response and help.

    Hey toolguy,

First off let me say your very perceptive, I found that it will only keep running if you keep revving it and also the battery was hooked up to a charger since it had died so that's why it was so weak. As for the fuel stabilizer none was used. I was worried about bad gas so I drained the tank, put fresh gas in with some fuel injector cleaner added just in case And started it up. Well tried to. Anyways any idea what it might be? It's killing me cause it's finally starting to be nice driving weather in Germany and she's out of commission. Thanks again for all you help.

Have your battery load tested properly as it sound like it is cranking slow, start with the basics first. Your engine sounded terrible when it started, a loud ticking/grinding noise, what is that? It may be lucky for you that it didn't start with that noise present. Check your oil level and make sure that it full and clean. Good luck with it.

The ticking sounds like a collapsed lifter. Some Z max in the oil might free it up. Whatever you do, do not put any kind of thickener in the oil. If the lifter doesn't free up, you have some work ahead of you. It may even be a stuck valve, that is hitting a piston. That would be some major work, like taking the engine apart....completely. I do not know about this particular type of engine, and am just putting out some basic engine ideas. Listen to the experts, like Paul...If you are in Germany, you may not have access to some of the equipment that is being suggested, but they will figure something out. A German winter is not particularly cold, but it is damp, compared to the states. You really should have stored the car in a more protected and dryer place...Good luck, and if anyone can fix this, these guys can....Be cool....Mike

OK I see, no stabil was used, good deal.

Sounds like your car was/is stored in a prety harsh environment as you described. Loads of moisture for sure!

We'll see what Paul says as I'm sure he's seen similar before.

It def sounds like a lifter is stuck for sure though. It also seems like your fuel pressure might be off, so I would check that too.

The noise at the end sounds like the starter was reengaged.

It might be worth a try putting some kind of additive (I usually never put additives in) that would help pump up pressure in the lifter. Like a cleaner/thinner. Then disconnect fuel so that it will def. not start. Put a big battery charger with a jump start setting on it. Crank it over maybe 10 sec then off a few min. Rinse and repeat. You are trying to pump oil in the lifter(s). Listen. Caution you will burn up the starter if you do this too much.

Then reconnect the fuel and try it. Do not rev it over 2k. Shut down if you anything except lifter tick.

Or pull the heads & do it the right way. If it was previously ok & then just did this the most recent try, I suspect a lifter(s).

I would also wait for a warm day or get it into a heated garage. Clean out the leaves.

Correct me if I'm wrong guys.
